In this sorrowful number, Jarvis Cocker laments how he failed to secure his childhood sweetheart, when times were blissfully simple. The vocals are eager and naïve, hopping about in a playful teenage way, and spark to life that youthful spirit you found kicking a can through the streets of an English town. There is that feeling of bitter regret for the years past, and a feeling of betrayal from the future. "Lets all meet up in the year 2000", Cocker's childlike anticipation makes it sound like the last day on Earth, some kind of prophetic last dance before the bright white light. "I never knew that you'd get married. I would be living down here on my own". His dejected tone is perfect as he clumsily asks his girl out, wholeheartedly giving his blessing for her to bring her 'baby'. A nostalgic, lump in the throat, Britannia tune.
